Imaging findings
The patient presented for acute respiratory distress. Nonspecific pleural effusion was identified on radiographs. Thoracocentesis was performed, and fluid cytology revealed the presence of numerous neutrophils, macrophages, and both intracellular and extracellular cocci and rods, consistent with a pyothorax.
