Small intestinal foreign material causing a complete mechanical obstruction
Confirmed
Imaging findings
- Marked gastric distention
- Focal marked distention of a ventral small intestinal loop containing soft tissue content with gas stippling and multiple angular mineral opacity fragments
- Multiple additional punctate and angular mineral opacities throughout the small and large intestines
What happened with the patient
Surgery was performed to remove the obstruction in the proximal jejunum. As material was being removed through the enterotomy site made in healthy tissue, the damaged area of intestine fully dehisced (seen in attached photo). A resection of 24 cm of jejunum was performed, with subsequent anastomosis. An additional enterotomy was made in the proximal duodenum to remove a non-obstructive piece of material that was unable to safely be milked into the resection site. The foreign material was suspected to be chewed-up pieces of bull kelp.
